Maker Interview: Gail Bryson

Gail creates simple graphic patterns and screenprints them onto natural linen using a striking colour palette to make limited edition tea towels, cushions, bags and pouches.
.
Who are you?
I am Gail a textile and print designer from Newcastle, now working and living in London.
.
What do you Make/Do?
I hand screen print on paper and textiles to make products for the home.
.
Do you have a background in craft and design - when did you first start making? I have a background in printed textile design but I only started printing and making my own products under my name about 5 years ago. I started printing on paper then moved onto linen. Before that I designed for others including Terence Conran and Jamie Oliver.
.
Can you describe your typical making process?
I don't really have a typical process. It usually starts with an idea in my head, then moves to paper, then my computer and then into the print room where I experiment and usually make a few mistakes which add to the process and usually results in something I wasn’t quite expecting.
.
What do you enjoy most about the process?
I enjoy most of it but particularly love mixing ink colours and coming up with new colour combinations. I also love the interaction with the different people I meet along the process.
.
Can you describe your studio/workspace?
I have a lovely two story studio in De Beauvoir Town which is part of a collection of workshops. It has lots of light and little gallery space and outside courtyard. I share the space with a few creative friends and a few dogs and love the fact it’s close to home and I can walk to work.
.
What keeps you going whilst you work - soundtrack? Snacks? A fluffy sidekick? My black lab Olive is always by my side (even when I am printing), black coffee, nuts and 6 music is usually always on the go too.
.
What can we look forward to seeing from you in the future?
I've been working on a exciting project with a furniture brand which will be launching in the Spring this year. I am also working on some new paper prints and looking forward to doing more workshops through out year
