Maker Interview: Zena Hamon

Zena's beautiful pen and ink illustrations feel gentle and organic. She draws visions of flowers and grasses with a wonderfully delicate touch…

Who are you?
I’m Zena Hamon, passionate about the environment and all the magical things the earth offers.
.
What do you Make/Do?
I draw and paint nature, both partly observed and imagined with a concept. My aim is to offer my work as a gentle moment away from the noise of everyday life, often posing the title of the pieces as a question to ponder.
.
Do you have a background in craft and design - when did you first start making?
My early love of drawing and making led me to studying Textiles for Fashion at the University of Brighton and working at various studios in London. I recently moved back home, inspired by the coastlines from my island home of Guernsey. I always notice and feel affection for plants and flowers springing up and trying to grow in unforgiving places.
.
Can you describe your typical making process?
My making process is usually quite spontaneous, it is also very much about quality over quantity. I tend to build up a collection of imagery that inspire me, usually snaps from my phone when out on hiking adventures around the island or on travels. I then feel out a collection based on what I’ve photographed, seen or the time of year but it is always usually triggered by the seasons or natural cycles. I then use inks to roughly sketch out the composition and let myself fall into the creative ‘zone’, drawing from my gathered imagery and minds-eye.
.
What do you enjoy most about the process?
It’s a very meditative approach. I enjoy channelling energy into something removed from distractions. It’s a moment to be completely with yourself, an analogue activity escaping time.
.
Can you describe your studio/workspace?
It’s currently a cosy corner in my front room, which luckily where it’s positioned on the west coast, captures beautiful evening light through the windows.
.
What keeps you going whilst you work - soundtrack? Snacks? A fluffy sidekick?
I love to listen to music as it can really inspire the pieces, falling into a world of visual rhythm. (One day I’ll have a fluffy sidekick!)
.
What can we look forward to seeing from you in the future?
I have an exciting collaboration coming up that I’ll be sharing later in the year.
.
Three things you can’t live without:
The sea, hiking and communication through creativity.
.
Three favourite places:
Island of Herm, California, the dinner table!
.
Three favourite foods:
I’m obsessed with Ombar Chocolate, can that be all three?
